Music markets and merriment...an eventful Christmas announced for Temple Bar
Looking for a new way to experience Dublin City this Christmas season? Temple Bar Cultural Trust has announced their programme of free events for the Christmas season which includes street performances, children’s workshops and entertainment for all the family.
The programme includes elves on stilts and children’s workshops, Christmas carols, a visual nativity exhibition with a difference, a Christmas-themed movie and book reading as well as eco-friendly gifts and the chance to learn how to achieve a sustainable kind of Christmas.
The 27th November will see the switching on of the Christmas tree and street lights and the events will run each Saturday until the 20th December, creating a magical festive atmosphere throughout the streets of Temple Bar and at the three outdoor markets; Designer Mart Cow’s Lane, Temple Bar Food Market and the Temple Bar Book Market.
A major attraction for people this year will be Designer Mart at Cow’s Lane, where Irish-based designers of fashion, furnishings, crafts and visual arts have been in situ every Saturday since March of this year. For the Christmas season, Designer Mart and the surrounding shops will make for an alternative place to shop for those looking for that special one-off gift as well as unique handmade Christmas gifts, candle-stick holders and miniature Christmas trees among other festive items.
The Old City Temple Bar is renowned for its unique atmosphere which is accentuated at Christmas time with festivities. Since its pedestrianisation the area has become something of a beacon for those looking for a sophisticated and relaxing city day out. Illustrating the areas integral part of the Capital’s and Ireland’s heritage and history, the Old City is home to the oldest theatre in Ireland – Smock Alley Theatre. Neighbouring the theatre is one of the finest city bakerys, Designer Mart on Saturday’s, an organic café, the Cultivate Sustainable Living Centre, award winning street architecture and even some of the original walls of Dublin.
The Saturday Food Market will have the best of organic turkey and geese as well as a range of Christmas-themed produce like mince pies, seasonal crepes and chocolates and the Book Market will be full of wonderful Christmas gift ideas with stalls stocking new and second hand copies of Dickens’ - A Christmas Carol, a whole range of children’s books including Dr Seuss and popular cookery books. Watch out for the Elves on stilts!
