How Google Works

When most of us are looking for a service or product online we simply "Google it", but how does Google actually work and how are some websites ranking on page one and others of a similar business on lets say page 5 or 6?? Well im no internet expert but there are a few things that Google use to determine where they rank a particular page.

So im going to explain the rudiments of Search Engine Optimisation or SEO ie. getting your site to rank well on search engines. When we talk about SEO we are really talking about Google, they decide where a web page sits (Google ranks web PAGES not sites) using Google's altorithm.

The altorithm is made up of many variables with the three main ones being:

  1. Content ie. your domain name, tags, key words etc.
  2. Links - inbound and outbound and the authority of those links.
  3. Activity - Traffic, comments, blog, new content, RRS subscriptions etc.

I know some SEO experts will say what im saying is over simplistic but I would challenge anyone to come up with a known Google Altorithm that does not fall into one of the above three core variables...they won't!!

To get your website ranking well you need to be doing three things:

  1. Getting quality and original site and page content
  2. Generating some quality links
  3. Generating human activity so as Google does not think its spam.

The real key here is you must do all three properly.

Also remember when you search Google you are not searching the web but searching Google's index of the web!!

No one really knows for sure how Google Altorithm works for sure as they make changes very frequently but the above three done properly will help in a more favourable ranking. The whole area of SEO is quiet complicated and I get asked alot from clients how they are ranking with thebestofkerry at top of page one etc, the truth being I can't  give a very detailed answer. Most of our featured businesses are ranking very well and alot has to do with the above three. I will go into this area in a little more detail in my next post but hope this helps anyone who has very basic knowledge this subject to understand it a little better!
