January blues are over at last
January seems to be a month that nobody likes very much. Everyone seems to be broke after over spending during the festival period and all those terrible bills still have to be paid. Well we are into February now and if like me you are a sports fan, things seem to look up little from here on. On a national level Ireland got off to winning ways against Italy on Saturday, although not having played particularly well, especially in the second half we got a deserved win which sets us up nicely for the away game against France on saturday.
Back to sport on a more local level, Kerry lost their opening game of the national league against Dublin in Killarney on Sunday. Dublin it must be said were deserving winners on the day even though me missed some glorious goal chances near the end. With Jack O Connor giving alot of fringe players a chance to impress on Sunday we came up against a fitter and sharper Dublin team who also were giving alot of players their first game. As we all know their are no All-Ireland medals won in February and come Championship time Kerry will not be found wanting, with the likes of the O'Sea trio, Tom and Darren O Sullivan, Colm Cooper and many more to come back we will hopefully be challenging for honours come the business end of the Championship later in the year.
This weekend sees two Kerry clubs Spa and Castlegregory in the All-Ireland Intermediate and Junior finals. Kerry clubs have had remarkable success over the last number of years in winning All-Ireland club titles. Finuge were the first, followed by Ardfert winning All-ireland Junior and Intermediate titles in succession. St Michaels Foilmore and Skellig Rangers also won titles last year. Lets hope Spa and Castlegregory can keep the flag flying for Kerry football this Sunday and bring more silverware back to the County.
My own club Churchill are playing in Knockaderry this weekend to compete in the Munster Novice tournament, this competition is run off over three weekends and hopefully the lads can keep up with what other Kerry clubs have achieved over the last number of years and bring a Munster title home.
On a personnal level it is great to have plenty of sport to look forward to at the weekends and hope both Kerry, Spa, Castlegregory, Churchill and the Irish Rugby team keep up winning ways.
